So What's The Big Deal?
Why Are Health Clearances So Important?
Health clearances help to ensure that your puppy has the absolute best chance of not having a genetically inherited health problem. As health testing has become more advanced over the years, especially with the addition of DNA testing, we feel that high quality breeders have no excuse to not be doing significant testing.
OFA Hip and Elbow Radiographs
At approximately 24 months of age our dogs go to an experienced veterinarian for radiographs of their hips and elbows. These radiographs are then submitted to a board of vets at the OFA for analysis. After careful consideration, these radiographs are then given a grade. Only qualified results from these tests will enter our breeding program.
OFA Heart Screening
The hearts of our dogs will be screened to determine heart size, valve function, and strength. Only after the veterinarian has determined the heart to be healthy enough for breeding, will the dog be entered into our breeding program.
CAER Eye Exam
Every year our breeding dogs will have a routine ophthalmic examination to assess the presence or absence of observable hereditary eye diseases. Only dogs that have normal eyes will be used in our breeding program.
Embark DNA Health Screening
We submit a DNA test from all of our dogs to Embark for analysis. Embark tests for over 210 genetic health risks and our dogs are clear on all health risks that they test for including breed-relevant genetic conditions such as, progressive retinal atrophy, macular corneal dystrophy, narcolepsy, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse, hereditary nasal parakeratosis, and skeletal dysplasia 2.
